BRW 2017 : Le Boeuf - A Parisian steakhouse with a special Café de Paris sauceThe past few years have seen steakhouses taking Bangkok’s dining scene by storm. From luxury restaurants to butcher’s steak shops, from imported Wagyu A5 to dry-aged domestic beef, Bangkok’s carnivorous diners are now spoiled for choice. While the competition usually focuses on the quality of the meat, Le Boeuf – a Parisian steak bistro, takes a step further. Since its opening in 2015, what makes Le Boeuf stand out has been its legendary Café de Paris sauce – the recipe of which is claimed to be the same as the one served in the original Café de Paris in Geneva. The holy grail of an entrecôte sauce that has been the hype among steak lovers for almost a century… Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?
****-The Story-****
The Café de Paris sauce is a complex butter-based sauce, and the story behind this special sauce is as complex as its recipe…
“Café de Paris” – the restaurant that created this sauce in the 1940’s - is in Geneva, but named after Paris. The concept is simple enough since there are only three things on the main menu; a green salad – the entrecôte steak with the signature “Café de Paris” sauce – and homemade French fries.
“Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecote” – Opened in 1959, this steak-and-fries bistro is in Paris, but named after Venice, and takes inspiration from the “Café de Paris” in Geneva. Although the two restaurants are not affiliated, the concept is the same, and the sauce is said to be a very similar.
“Le Boeuf” – A Parisian steak bistro in Bangkok whose name means “The beef” but lamb, salmon, and sometimes lobsters, are also on the menu. In this age of consumerism, we definitely should have more choices than just blue, rare, medium, and well done – right? So, while the concept of serving green salad and fries with steak remains, this is probably the only place where you can pair the famous Café de Paris sauce with the meat of your choice. Now THAT is what I love about this restaurant!
****-Bangkok Restaurant Week 2017 : Dinner Set-****
The full price for this dinner set is 1,768++ Baht, but with this BRW deal, the price went down to 999++ Baht. For those who miss this deal, don’t despair. Regular customers know that Le Boeuf launches value-for-money promotion from time to time, and you can check the current promotion at http://www.leboeufgroup.com/ .
● Complimentary Bread – The baguette had a nice texture and served warm, quite a pleasant start to this hearty meal.
● Walnut Green Salad – The vegetables were fresh. The walnuts were nice and crunchy. The only thing I have to complain is that the red oak lettuces were very, very bitter – to the point that the bitterness masked the taste of the vinaigrette dressing entirely. Other reviewers whose salad consisted only of iceberg lettuce and walnut seem to have no such problem though.
● Mushroom Soup – This mushroom soup was very rich, creamy, and well-seasoned. I wish there were more mushrooms in the soup, but for accompanying a steak, this is decent enough.
● Lamb Steak with Special Herb Butter Sauce– Following the true Café de Paris tradition, the steak was served on a hot plate with a candle underneath. My lamb was a perfect medium rare, and the meat was top-quality – juicy and tender, with no unpleasant odor. As for the sauce, the rich butter base blended well with refreshing spices and herbs, the taste leaned a bit toward the salty side in a pleasant, tasty way. Le Boeuf’s reputation is built on their sauce recipe, and I whole-heartedly agree that the sauce is truly the pièce de résistance of this steak!
● Unlimited French Fries – Served hot and crispy, these French fries can be eaten alone or dipped in the steak sauce. Seeing that none of the frites got soggy or limb even after being left a while, I have to say the chef really did a good job!
● Chocolate Ice Cream – The texture of the ice cream was quite firm and creamy. The chocolate taste was intense, and the crispy chocolate chips inside made it even more delightful. Love it!
● Orange Juice – Being a steak bistro, Le Boeuf’s wine list is quite extensive. However, a teetotaler (like me) can opt for a glass of fresh juice instead. From the taste of it, I believe their orange juice was 100% fresh, with no added salt or syrup. …A healthy, refreshing drink to go with this rich, meaty meal indeed.

****-The Verdict-****
David J Perrot, the owner of Le Boeuf, claimed that he’s got the original sauce recipe from the Café de Paris in Geneva. As someone who has never tried the original “Entrecôte au beurre Café de Paris” before, I can’t tell if the claim is true or not. But the sauce from Le Boeuf’s kitchen was, in my opinion, quite impressive. The lamb was flavorsome. The service was impeccable. Overall, this is a nice place to go when you crave for a big piece of tender steak poured over by a delicious herb-butter sauce. And you don’t have to go as far as Switzerland for it!
