Sum Tum Thai
A giant fish statue in front of the restaurantI was attracted by the giant fish statue. I guess this restaurant must be famous for the fish dishes. Upon my arrival to the parking lot, I saw this fish statue on top of a pond. And I was surprised to see that the water was covered with these ubiquitous, thick, greenish, slimy-looking algae. Looking at a pond with green algae is not appetizing. It is like eating in front of dirty mosquito-breeding pond. My first impression was not good at all. But I was already there. I shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I decided to stay. The waitress recommended several dishes. 1. Phad Cha fish ปลาคังผัดฉ่า - 160 baht Kang fish filets stir-fried with fingerroot, basil leaves, green peppercorn, chili, kaffir lime leaves etc. The fish filets were moist and had all of the Thai herbal aroma. Not a bad dish in general. 2. Som Tum Thai - 50 baht Upon the first bite, there was a pungent taste of salted crab flavor. I assumed that the chef did not clean the mortar and pestle thoroughly after the chef made the salted crab Som Tum for the previous customers. This Som Tum was a bit on the sweet side and a bit too salty. 3. Squids stir-fried with salted eggs - 220 baht When I ordered this dish, I expected the taste of the rich salty egg yolk blended into the freshness of the squids. This dish was completely out of my expectation, but not in a positive way. The chef used so much sweet chili paste, the squids were soaked into the sweet chili sauce. It had absolutely overwhelmed the salted eggs. I could not even find any trace of the salted eggs flavor. 4. a plate of rice I think it is quite unnecessary to put the unedible flower and banana leaf as decoration on the plate of rice. If this is a high end restaurant serving rice on a fancy ceramic plate: maybe. But it was serve on a plastic plate: no. Overall, I think this restaurant needs some improvement on dishes and the exteriors.... อ่านต่อ
