Eats Payao

This is a lovely, cozy restaurant located near the market area of Nang Linchee. I was excited to try the Hanglay dumplings (เกี้ยวฮังเล), tantalizingly stuffed with hanglay curry according to the menu photo. Unfortunately, each dumpling had but a pea-sized portion of hanglay. They provided a tiny vessel of hanglay on the side in attempted compensation, but my overall impression was of eating deep fried dough. When the northern style pork larb (ลาบหมูคั่ว) arrived, I was relieved to smell and taste the correct herbs present, but found it to be excessively oily and salty and not sufficiently spicy (around 1/3 as spicy as authentic article). Furthermore, no fresh herbs (ผักกับลาบ) were provided, which is a pretty glaring omission. A portion of pork rinds (แคบหมู) was provided, but I’d rather have had the herbs. The sticky rice (ข้าวเหนียว)I ordered to accompany the larb was also kind of a letdown, as it was dry and hard, as if it were unsuccessfully reconstituted from the prior day.
